Columbine

sadness, loneliness, and madness

Why madness? Because the columbine resembles a court jester's cap.

In the Middle Ages, the Fool was not always considered a simpleton, he was attributed a superior wisdom, which sometimes made him a more listened-to figure than the highest dignitaries.

The sadness and solitude of the columbine do not truly come from the plant itself ,they come from what was attributed to it. A rhyme (ancolie(in french) → melancholy), but also because it is a plant that grows naturally in isolated woods.

So why is the columbine a weed? It is not one, and has never been considered as such, especially since it is not a plant that naturally evokes sadness.
